About us

Fotodoks is organised and carried out as an independent festival by a curatorial collective of photographers who strive to turn the festival into a special and exciting event every two years with great enthusiasm and idealism.

  • Photographer

    Frank Bauer

    Frank (*1967) studied photography at the Staatliche Fachakademie für Fotodesign in Munich. He works as a freelance photographer with a focus on portraiture and reportage.In 2019 he became part of the Fotodoks curators' collective. His main tasks here are to reach out to the photographers and artists featured at Fotodoks and to establish cooperations between the Faculty of Design at Munich's University of Applied Sciences and Fotodoks.

    Sima Dehgani

    Sima (*1985) studied Art and Multimedia at LMU and subsequently photography at the Academy of fine arts in Munich. In addition to her work as a freelance photographer for editorial clients, she pursues her documentary projects. Since 2019 she has been part of the Fotodoks curatorial team and takes care of the artist contact and the online presence.

    Dominik Gigler

    Dominik (*1968) studied at the Staatliche Fachakademie für Fotodesign in Munich and at the London College of Printing in London. In 2009 he was one of the exhibiting artist at the Fotodoks Festival in Bad Aibling, showing his personal project 'Along the River Lea'. Since January 2019 he has been a member of the Fotodoks curators' collective and is responsible for the catalogue production and budget management.

    Lisa Hörterer

    Lisa (*1980) studied photography at the University of Applied Science in Munich. She works as a freelance photographer and was part of the team that founded the magazine „Salopp - ein junges Heft für freie Fotografie“. Since January 2019 she is involved in the Fotodoks curators' collective where she is responsible for the fundraising, the cataloge and image production.

    Verena Kathrein

    Verena (*1983) studied photography at the Munich University of Applied Sciences. She works as a freelance photographer specialized in portrait and reportage photography. In 2016 she was a recipient of the Rome Scholarship of the Republic of Austria where she initiated the artistic research project "Then I would like to make a happy end for once" in collaboration with the artist Ariane Müller. Since 2019 she is a member of the Fotodoks curators collective and contributes to the teams: exhibition planning, fundraising and artist support.

    Tanja Kernweiss

    Tanja studied photography at the University of Applied Science in Munich and did her post-graduate with Arno Fischer at the Ostkreuzschule in Berlin. In 2015 she received the audience award at the Fotodoksfestival with her work "Wishing Well".
    Tanja lives and works in Munich, and joined the Team in 2019, and and is in charge of picture handling and the exhibition for Fotodoks.

    Nadine Loës

    Nadine (*1979) is a freelance Photographer and Graphic designer. After her apprenticeship as a Mediadesigner in Stuttgart she studied first Photography at the University of Applied Science in Munich and then finished her Photography Postgraduate Study at the „Ostkreuzschule“ in Berlin with Ute Mahler and Robert Lyons. She was founder and editor of „salopp – an independent magazine for young photography“. Since 2019 she takes care of Fundraising, Catalogue and Exhibition planning for the Fotodoks Festival.

    Jakob Schmitt

    Jakob (*1987) studied Photography at the University of Applied Science in Munich, where he is now based, working as a freelance photographer. His interest in people, his fascination by their behaviour and interaction is what drives him to take pictures. For his personal work, he focuses on certain regions, creating site-specific stories. Jakob joined the Fotodoks team for the 2019 edition, where he takes care of website, social media, and administration.

    Jens Schwarz

    Jens, born 1968 in Berlin, studied history of arts in Paris and photography in Munich. Since 2019 he is a member of the Fotodoks curatorial team with a focus on education.

  • Curator and Author

    Sophia Greiff

    Sophia (*1982) is a freelance curator and photographer. From 2011 to 2013 she was a scholarship holder in the program Museum Curators for Photography of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation and joined Fotodoks while working at the Munich City Museum in 2011. In 2014 and 2015 she took over the organizational management of the festival. Since 2016, Sophia has been a research assistant in the photojournalism and documentary photography course at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, writing her dissertation and supporting the new Fotodoks team in an advisory capacity.

    Hans Herbig

    Hans (*1973) came to photography via skateboarding and snowboarding. He was co-founder of Pleasure Snowboard magazine and its picture editor, until he joined the magazine Onboard as picture editor-in-chief. His special passion for mountain worlds - he is UIMLA International Mountain Leader -, sports and landscapes characterizes his photography. Hans initiated the Fotodoks Festival together with Robert Pupeter in 2008 in Bad Aibling.

    Jörg Koopmann

    Jörg (*1968) 1993 Diploma in photo design, until 1996 photographer at Lenbachhaus. Since 1997 self-employed and mainly working in the field of reportage/portrait. 2001 Photography Award of the City of Munich. Co-founder of the photo forum glossy. 2009 start of the book with a beard publishing house. In 2010 he was co-initiator of the Sight-_seeing project in Tyrol. From 2014 to 2020 he is curator and director of the exhibition hall Lothringer13. Lives in Munich and Copenhagen and works closely with Lene Harbo Pedersen on art and photo projects. Jörg has been co-organizer of the Fotodoks Festival since 2009 and was still involved as consultant for the new Fotodoks team for 2019.

    Robert Pupeter

    Robert (*1971) has been working for many years as a photographer in the fields of reportage and portrait photography. He also works on freelance projects dealing with the perception of landscape and the relationship between man and space. He is co-initiator of exhibition projects such as Gruppenzwang, Kurzstrecke, socio-cultural platforms such as hofHaus Weicht and founded the Fotodoks Festival together with Hans Herbig in 2008.

    Armin Smailovic

    Armin (*1968) studied at the Bavarian State School for Photography in Munich. He had his first job during the war in Croatia 1991-93. Since then, he is deeply involved with post-conflict societies and political issues. In the early years Michael Schmidt was his mentor and brought him to author photography. His reportage and portrait photographs were awarded among others, in 2014 with the Hansel Mieth Award and the Award of the City of Munich. 2009 Armin won the Fotodoks Prize and went straight into the organization of the festival.
